Fridays at Home

18th November 2011

I think I may be losing my mind: I want to paint my kitchen cabinets…all 30 of them. I just had to read about a kitchen redesign on Young House Love today that had cheap-o cabinets similar to mine. I mean, I love my kitchen, but I’ve never loved my cabinets, and this person painted hers within a week.

So…that got me to thinking – why can’t I do the same? I also want to change the wall color. It will be hard work, but heck, I’ve painted every other room in the house. As usual, I turned to Pinterest and realized how much I was drawn to one particular color.

Notice anything? Yes, that turquoise-y, minty green. Apparently I’m in love with it as I pinned all these kitchens months ago. So I tried to find the paint color in the last picture (because it’s my favorite and closer to what I envision in the space).

The top left is my favorite, and the color is Behr’s Garden View 470-D4. I’ll start with that and get some samples in that range and go bright white on my cabinets.

What do you think? Have I really lost it this time? Do you have any tips for sanding and painting cabinets? I’m a bit afraid it’s a huge undertaking and could use some personal anecdotes (hopefully positive ones). ๐Ÿ™‚

My parents painted their kitchen cabinets a turqoise-y green like that a few years ago. Here’s my tip: let the cabinet doors dry lying horizontal instead of vertical, because otherwise the paint drips and it looks really ghetto.

    • Good tip. Another I found was to lie them on top of something that would raise it up just a bit to get to the edges. Thanks!

  • I have no advice re: the DIY, but green-blues are my favourite colour! I only have a bedroom, not a house, but I painted my walls Behr Indian Ocean and loooove it. In case you need another sample. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • Oooh, thanks for the paint chip. I will definitely take a look at it when I go for paint. I’m getting more and more excited. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • No problem! It turned out a bit more saturated than I expected (so might be too dark for what you had in mind), esp with all the white contrast in my room, but it’s a gorgeous colour. You can see it in any of my recent vlogs, although of course all monitors are different!

If I ever have my own place to decorate, all the colours will be blue-greens (from mint to teal) or pale, pale pink (the kind that’s almost tan/cream). ๐Ÿ˜€

  • Love these kitchen colors. If I didn’t rent, I’d be all over this.

    • I’ll let you come see when I’m in the middle of the worst of it. It’ll cure you from that.

  • I bet it will be gorgeous!! We redid our cabinets once–I was told to make sure to degrease them first (house was about 30-40 years old)–not sure if that makes a difference, though. But yes, go for the color!!

    • Thanks for the tip! I did wipe mine down first, but they were new when I bought the house, so they were really fine. So excited!

  • I love that turquoise color, and it looks awesome juxtaposed with that wood flooring.

Your kitchen is going to look awesome.

    • Thank you! Unfortunately, I don’t have wood floors in that room – it’s the only room without. BUT maybe one of these days. I’m so excited and am getting closer each day. I’ll have an update post tomorrow.

  • I love this color, too! To the point that I found a blog that is SOLELY dedicated to it and has the loveliest pictures posted all the time. I think you might like the site, too – http://www.houseofturquoise.com/ She is fantastic and I drool over her posts. Can’t wait to see how your redesign turns out; based on your prior pics of your house, I am confident it’s going to be incredible!

    • I recently found her blog too! I LOVE it. Everything she does is amazing.
